edge of extinction (2020 review)

Story: Edge of Extinction starts in the aftermath of a nuclear war, the Boy (Hobson) lives in isolation away from everyone, keeping his supplies together until he meets a Girl (Smibert) who ends up being a trap for a group of Road Rats, with The Man (Kaye) taking his stuff. The bleak isolation and misery is established early on, the pace should then parallel the fear and uncertainty of the violence and kidnapping yet it seems to lap it on several occasions. But not Edge of Extinction. The human race will become extinct. Edge of Extinction is available on Digital on the 18th May 2020 and out on DVD later this year. Some well-crafted action scenes are thwarted by a stilted script in Andrew Gilbert’s plodding post-apocalyptic thriller, Last modified on Thu 21 May 2020 13.36 BST. It’s a difficult scenario to keep original without accidentally stepping on the toes of a previous attempt and Edge of Extinction is no different. Cannibals are all that survive, apart from a bunch of rag tag people here and there. The girl is used by the man as bait to trap lonely people to steal their goods, she doesn’t want to be involved in this, but this is the only way to survive in this world, until she learns the worst in humanity. The strangest moment comes when when Smibert’s character is briefly imprisoned as a sex slave by the Beast, and she briefly befriends another young woman chained up for the same purpose. Semi-satisfied with this, The Man stabs The Boy in the hand and leaves with The Girl, his dickhead friend and the stash. Not accounting for a gang of Road Rats to also be hot on their trail, The Boy, for some reason, decides to alert the The Girl, Man and dickhead about their impending deaths. It isn’t badly shot by any means, with one or two effective action scenes and interesting use of remote locations, but it takes two ploddingly long hours to tell a cumbersomely inflated and often dull story, which even at the finish line has to be wound up pretty arbitrarily. With Luke Hobson, Georgie Smibert, Chris Kaye, Bryn Hodgen. The story is, of course, headed for a monumentally horrible, medieval-style bloodbath, and the film delivers on that score, but the dialogue scenes are leaden and it is impossible to feel any sympathy or interest in any of its characters. Nuclear fallout could happen. This might well be a story that we have seen before, with the humans being the only enemy this time. This forces The Boy and The Man to put aside their differences and work together to attempt a rescue mission. Bryn Hodgen works well as the lead villain, with his menacing behaviour showing the psychotic side. Not enough happens to the characters, nothing of interest anyway. After just witnessing The Road Rats perform a needless execution, trust isn’t something that is floating about for The Boy but The Girl soon manages to talk him into giving her a pigeon and even a bed for the night in his cabin. Change ). I’m fairly certain that the good guys really lost this fight. Ambushing The Boy as he sleeps, The Man (Chris Kaye) ties him to a chair, beats him and demands to know where else his gear is stashed. Yungblud – God Save Me, But Don’t Drown Me Out. It is well acted, with the only problem being the length of the film. Unfortunately though that’s not sufficient enough to make a film about it. It’s a cool concept but the lack of characterisation and truly woeful acting really lets Edge of Extinction fall flat. Most movies, even the greatest ones, evaporate like mist once you’ve returned to the real world; they leave memories behind, but their reality fades free quickly. There is no reason for the audience to like any of the characters, other than perhaps two near the back end of the film.
